how do melons grow
I know this probably sounds silly but been searching online and some say across the ground and others allegedly grow them upwards.
I was planning on perhaps growing one of the varieties they sell at the real seed company as they reckon they grow well in cooler climates. The thiing is next year I wanted to try some square foot gardening and didn't want one plant taking over the whole thin. If I could grow it upwards would be ideal.

You can train them to climb but you'll have to "net" the fruit as it gets bigger (bit like a hammock).
Just basically takes the strain off the plant and puts it onto the climbing frame.
Never tried it with something like a watermelon though.0
