In an Orthodontic Quagmire- please help

Options
I started orthodontic treatment about 10 months ago and havent had a good relationship with the orthodontist from the beginning. Thinking this was merely a personality conflict I perservered with the treatment- big mistake as he has greeted nearly every concern I have raised with hostility.

Anyway currently I am supposedly nearing the end of my treatment to fix an overlap of my top front 2 teeth, and I am not happy with the result. The alignment of the centre of the front 2 teeth is markedly to the right of the centre of the bottom 2 (does this make sense?) and also my bite is so off that I cant comfortably rest my upper and lower teeth together. This has resulted in constant tension pain in my jaw and neck.
When I last saw my orthodontist and queried repeatedly the lack of alignment of my centre teeth all he would say was he'd done the best he could and if I had a problem I was free to seek a 2nd opinion.

So at additional expense I saw another orthodontist. They advised that getting a single brace was like a middle ground solution- a 'not perfect' result balanced against the cost saving. That in their experience that unless a lower brace was used to align the bite and the lines on teeth it was never going to be quite right or perfect. That teeth will move of the path of least resistance so if the gap on one side is nearer they will move towards that free space.
This all makes sense to me now but none of this at any point was explained to me by my own orthodontist, who just asked did I want a lower brace and when I said I didnt think I needed it agreed with me.

So I feel like I was completely ill-advised or not advised properly at all right from my initial consultation. I dont even know whether I would've had any treatment at all if I'd known this information at the start. Why would I pay nearly £2k for something that took my teeth that were aligned in the centre before treatment and leave them like this with a misaligned bite that causes me great discomfort.

This cost me most of my savings plus extra for a 2nd opionion and I cant afford to seek legal advice or the cost of starting treatment again with a lower brace- I dont even know whether I have any grounds to take action. I feel so upset by the orthodontist and his actions and treatment I just wish I'd never started the whole thing.

Can anyone advise me on how to proceed? The Britist Orthodontic society doesnt seem to have any clout with practitioners. Is there any other route I can take or anything I can say to my orthodontist (that wont get me thrown out ;)).
The only thing I can think off is to refuse to have the brace removed until my bite is comfortable but that does nothing to fix the alignment of teeth at the front.
