Cancelling BT Landline

Will I have to pay out the whole contract if I choose to cancel? I have been with them for nearly two years

    Yes .
  • It depends on what you mean by "the whole contract". Normally phone is 12m and broadband 18m, so in theory you won't be in a contract. However if you had the "auto-renewing" contract then you may be just on the cusp of that renewing for another year or may have tipped into the next year following auto-renewal meaning you're contracted for up to another 12m.

You'll need to establish that to work out what the cancellation fees might be.
  • Hi
I had the same thing and after getting a notification from BT I decided to investigate, my thread below highlights what I done.
Just left BT early without paying termination fee - you can do it too!

Been really wound up with BT's price going up in October so I checked their small print and found this
    Changing the terms (notification)

If we make a change to the price or the terms and conditions of a service which is to your material disadvantage, you will not have to pay a charge if you decide to end that service early, unless the Tariff Guide says otherwise. However, once we have told you about such a change, you must let us know that you want to end that service within 10 days. This agreement will continue to apply to any other services that are not affected by any changes that we make.

So....I thought I'd call them to cancel my contract (took ages to find the number but if you're interested it's 0800 800 150). Anyway, I got out of my contract early and with no additional charges!

My friends are going to do the same - we're freeeeeeeeeeee!

    Hope this helps you!!

I can confirm that the 50p line rental rise is enough to say you want to quit. Canceled mine couple of days ago, no cancellation fee, bye bye BT :)

I did not have to pay as I said I would be materially disadvantaged by their price increases as per their clause 48 when they sent me notification of the increase. They will say you have 10 days but Ofcom state you have 30 days!!

Actually, it is neither 10, nor 30 days. It is a 'reasonable' period. This is because the right to cancel due to material disadvantage arising from changed terms & conditions is a common law right and does nto arise from statute or from the contract itself. So if you were notified the day after you went on a fortnight's holiday, you could still cancel and argue that you had given notice within a reasonable period.
