Just read article about trojan cleaning out online bank accounts.

Reading some of comments & suggestions Linux operating system seems to be bug free, but had a look and appears v complicated, esp if I want to continue to use my existing windows office software etc. Any advice, I have Vista?

I run IP8, is there a better, safer, easy to use (ie something which doesnt affect what I already have) system?

Also is it worth using a cleaner like CCleaner? Or will it just slow my system down?

My Windows Firewall is switched on, but am unsure as to how to configure to increase security levels, tried reading help section but found it just too technical, again any advice welcome.

I currently use Avira and Malwarebytes regularly.

Firstly - no, Linux is not free from bugs and security holes, though it has fewer such problems than Windows, and is also currently less vulnerable because it is used by relatively few people.

I don't think there's a good reason to move from Windows to Linux specifically to be more secure - it may be a bit safer today, but there's nothing to say that it will still be tomorrow. Vista and Win7 can be made quite secure without any great complexity - probably the most important is to make sure that Windows Update is set to keep updated automatically.

If you have a router (as opposed to a USB-connected broadband modem) then the Windows Firewall should be fine, with no need to change the default settings. If you have a USB modem, I'd consider changing it for a router.

Personally I would not use IE. It can be made quite secure, but for me the history of security holes in it is just too worrying. Firefox with the NoScript add-on is excellent - it takes a bit of getting used to, but it virtually eliminates the risks associated with browsing.

I'll leave it for someone else to comment on CCleaner - I had a bad experience a few years ago with a registry cleaner, and have not touched the like since. In theory it should speed things up a bit - provided it doesn't go wrong and trash the whole Windows installation...
  • ccleaner won't slow your system down, just tidy up irrelevant registry items (and you can back up before action if worried as part of the software - automatic prompt).
handy startup program manager in there to help you speed up your start-up
    Friendly greeting!

    Hi
You have Windows Firewall switched on, that's fine.
You should have Avira running all the time.
Then occasionally use MalwareBytes to check for any viruses that have got past Avira.

CCleaner won't necessarily improve security but it's good to run it occasionally to clean away unwanted stuff (as danthemoneysavingman said).

Apart from that, as fwor suggested, try to learn how to use a different browser such as Firefox.
If you use NoScript addon with Firefox then you need to know what you're doing.

    Edit
You should also have Windows set to check automatically for updates, or else check them yourself religiously.

    Thanks for your replies.

Already run Avira all time & do Malwarebytes once every few days.
Windows auto updates regularly. Any tips to ensure Firewall's security is at best - at moment its on standard auto settings is this enough?

    What is noscript addon?

    Hi
I think the Windows Firewall will be OK, I don't know how to adjust it.
If you got to the ShieldsUp website it will test to see if it's OK.

NoScript is an addon that only works with Firefox browser.

"Allow active content to run only from sites you trust, and protect yourself against XSS and Clickjacking attacks".

    I don't use it now.
