we have just traded our old focus in for a newer better one.garage is taxing it for 6 months for us and full tank of fuel etc.our old car had 12 months tax put on 1st july.are we within our rights to take it and cash it in,or is it classed as part of the trade in? they never mentioned it and just said our car would be stuck in an auction due to mega high mileage and rust on bonnet etc.they didnt give us a very good trade in,just the 'we buy any car' price we had found on net.its £100 better in our pocket than theirs but is it allowed?

If its part of the deal, no its their property. If it isn't specified, cash it in. (This cash-in perk cant be done by the salesman anymore as you now have to have the car in your name to get a refund and it's just not worth the hassle).

As per Colino, unless you've specifically said you'll leave the tax, then take it and cash it in.

I didn't know the traders couldn't claim the refund - certainly every time I've PX'd a car the dealer has told me to take the tax disc off and claim the refund myself, which was nice - now I know why :-)

  • I have just sold my focus and bought a new fiesta, I just took the tax disc from my focus and nothing was mentioned about it.

Sent it off to the DVLA with the refund form at the same time as sending the relevant part of the V5 for the focus.

I suspect in your case they will make a deal of it.

Most trade ins now are returned as they cant be cashed in and are no good whilst sitting on the forecourt however an auction car will have value added potentially for a years road tax.

i was sat in the car while he went round it telling their appraiser everything in a phone call.no tax was mentioned.i suppose its not that much money if they do ask us to leave it.
