Using bike no claims on car policy

My son has recently had several car insurance quotes which come in at around £5k at age 17. There's no way he can afford this so had decided to buy a scooter instead.

I've read online that some insurers (directline, churchill, e-car and some others) with allow you to use your bike no claims on a car policy so he's planning on using the bike for 2 years to build his no claims and bring his car insurance down considerably.

My question is does the motorbike insurance have to be with the company that you eventually want to take the car policy out with or can he build up his bike no claims with any company and then transfer it to one of the ones mentioned?

Thanks.

Thanks - I assume when the time comes he'll need to phone them for a quote rather than do it online?

Not necessarily - eg Tesco just accept bike ncd online as normal.

You might want to consider eBike. I have found them quite competitive for motorcycle insurance and you should have no trouble transfering ncb to eCar when the time comes.

As you are probably aware two wheels are dangerous and you may want to invest in some good safety equipment and additional training for your son.

The problem I have getting quotes online is that I have had my driving license for 2 years but I have 5 years no claims, (some from bike) every insurer i have tried wont accept this on line, but I just up the number of years I have had my license to get an estimate and then phone the insurance company to get a final price.

Also I dont think all insurance company take bike NC, its best to check and declare rather then wait until you might need to make a claim. e.g my first years car insurance was from admiral who didnt take bike no claims, but year two i switched to Direct line who did.

I used a different company every year for bike insurance and a different company each year for car insurance, so you dont have to stick with the same on.

ohh and dont underestimate the importance of a good sold secure lock! If you have a budget of £1000 for scooter get one for £900 instead and spend £100 on the lock if you have to. I would say it would be worth its weight in gold, but thats not true as they weigh about 8kg! lol

  • Carole Nash will accept a bike NCD on a car policy but you must have both your bike and car policy with them at the same time.

They also do a "six wheel" policy that alows you to have both your car and bike insured under one policy.

eCar do accept bike insurance NCD and offer multi-vehicle policies.

You are an IAM member. I suggest you use the service and contact them for help/advice, although I have never had a competitive quote from their nominated insurance companies.
