Is there a way i can send a message to another computer on my network?

Is there a way i can send a message to another computer on my network?
other than via msn- yahoo or an email - coz sometimes we aren't online at the same time.

We got a 3 storey house and sometimes i want to be able to send a quick ping to another computer so is there i software i can install to all the devices so i can commincate to all those at home.

all suggestions welcomed :T

Can you use IP address to specify the recipient machine?

try searching for net send on google. it is a built in feature to windows xp and I believe 2000 and later versions of nt.

You could possibly try this if you prefer a gui front end:

you'll need to enable the messenger service if you have sp2 (start, run, services.msc)

Yes I have used VNC, it may be a bit ott for what you need, it is a remote control package with optional chat, file transfer etc.. you can set it up to prompt the other person before accepting a connection

I presume you are doing all this behind a router?

Yes, i am- seems hard for a novice

Ive had a look @ net send but al the MS DOS prompts and commands may get on my mums nerves! haha

What about LanToucher Network Chat (it's free).
I use it between my desktop in the study and the laptop in the lounge. :rolleyes:
