Have to say I'm really pleased with the Foodsaver one I got. Been experimenting with Lidl bags, mainly successfully, which I'm using for items in the fridge that won't keep too long. Been using the proper bags for the freezer so far. I've found it really good on resealing jars of pesto, roast peppers etc. I've even done half a container of soft cheese. Chicken for coq au vin is marinating as I speak. I'm getting slightly addicted :)

I read all this thread the other day for ideas on the best way to use the cheaper bags in the food saver machine . I thought I had cracked it the other day with cheap straws but they were very hit and miss .. would be OK if I had enough fingers to pinch the straw tight after the air was out but by the time I had cut the top off the straw and gone to reseal air was back in.. So that was disappointing, wasnt to bad with folding the straw as soon as the straw went flat but still not perfect..

Well today I was unwrapping a parcel from ebay and was popping the bubble wrapped, when POW it hit me .. Yes and it works perfectly.. air out and seal perfect YES!!!!!!
PS do still double seal further up ( after cutting the bubble wrap down a bit) as air will eventually come out if you dont.

That's interesting, as I tried it and it didn't work. I'll try again. Lidl bags were very hit and miss for me,but I use them for short term things like half a lemon. I seem to get a more reliable seal using cheaper bags if I place about 3cms of a proper roll between the bag at the top , so that it touches the top of the bag but misses the sealer. I decided the seal wasn't as effective if it had to includre a straw or sealing strip. Might be something to do with my machine. Best thing I bought was the canisters, and now seal most things in jars. I can't find the youtube video, but basically you just put the jar in a canister, vacuum it, and as you release the pressure on the canister, the metal lid pops shut.

The bubble wrap didn't work? Maybe the bubbles were to big? I used the smaller bubble wrap and it was perfect. I just added the extra seal at the top as it does lose air after a day or so but not with the double seal.

Yes I thought that when I was looking for a vacuum sealer..

In the end I bought a foodsaver one from Lakeland.

Just had another look at his feed back and he has sold a few for under £60 so maybe not?

Does anyone use their sealer to seal jars of jam that don't seal by themselves? Just wondering if they last as long as those that 'pop down' without any assistance?

    Thanks.

Yes, I've done this, and the seal is very good, so good that it's very difficult to open them at all. I can't tell you if the jam will keep as long, as I've only had the jam a couple of months, but I reckon the seal is stronger.
