Desktop Computer wont boot up

Can someone please help me?
My desktop computer running XP Pro wont boot up.
On starting up all seems well from the noise from the tower except a louder than usual noise from the fans and no bios screen.
After leaving about 3 hours and crashing it starts to boot up with the bios screen followed by the XP loading screen that then is loading for sometime before eventually screen going blank for a moment or so ( when I would expect the log on page to appear) but instead the screen fades off from the middle out, then blank.
At this stage if I hit enter the Windows welcome sound can be heard but still a blank screen.
If I use my laptop through the network and see what computers are on I can see the desktop and can access files on the laptop through the network.
Can someone please tell me what is wrong?

From the second part of your description it just sounds like there is something wrong with the video output so that could be something as simple as the cable loose to something as expensive as the monitor busted.
It could be the video card I guess but that will usually cause some beeping and can just stop it booting at all.
You could try plugging the monitor into your laptop assuming that like most it has a video out connector - that will at least test the monitor and its lead.
If you can in fact see the screen you could try booting in safe mode - it may be that the video res is screwed up.0 -

Thank you very very much for your reply, I don't know why I did'nt try the Monitor but I now have using the laptop and as you suggested it appears "busted".
I have now connected an old Win 98 computer monitor and it works ok.
I can not believe how I made do with this old monitor - it like using an old "brick" mobile phone instead one of today.
At least I have only to get a new monitor instead of motherboards, graphics cards etc.
The "busted" monitor is a Suyama 19" flatscreen I think from Micro Direct or Ebuyer - do you have any suggestions on what I should look at getting?
Thank you again.0
