If you find a leaflet pushed through your letterbox from airambulanceservice.org.uk be warned it is not what it appears to be. We received them in South Staffordshire today but it seems that other parts of the country had them earlier this year.
It asks for donations of clothing and similar items, and even offers the chance to get an air ambulance service 'membership card' for the cost of a £5 phone call or text, but a little bit of research seems to expose this organisation as nothing more than a company that trades in used textiles.
Naughty. Very naughty.

There is much online about this SCAM!IMPORTANT NOTICE! – Air Ambulance warns of possible doorstep collection scam
July 14, 2010 by Nick
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Charity (DSAA) is warning residents not to be confused by a commercial company which has been carrying out doorstep collections of clothing, jewellery, toys, and other items.
The company is called Air Ambulance Service (Trading Co Ltd) but has no official connection with the DSAA.
In fact, it is not known whether any money raised by the company has ever been given to any Air Ambulance charity.
It puts leaflets through people’s letterboxes showing a photograph of a yellow helicopter, similar to the one flown by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, which can lead householders to think the company is supporting the Charity.
DSAA charity manager Charlotte Routley said: “It is causing distress to people when they later find out that this is a profit-making commercial company which has nothing to do with us at all.Investigation Into Charity Clothing Bag Scam

TRADING standards officers are investigating charity bag collection scams after misleading leaflets have been distributed in the area leading people to believe they are donating to Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA).
A leaflet has been put through doors in the areas served by the WNAA, by an organisation that has no connection to any of the legitimate UK air ambulance charities. The leaflet is headed Air Ambulance Service, but closer inspection reveals a text costs an extortionate £5 and phone calls £1.50 per minute.
A spokesperson for WNAA said: “The leaflet is very misleading and could easily lead people into thinking they are supporting our vital life-saving service. As a registered charity we rely on voluntary income to keep us flying and saving lives and it is upsetting that this company seems to be confusing people over who they are supporting. I would therefore urge supporters to look for our registered charity number (1098874) when making a donation.”
A spokesman for Warwickshire Trading Standards Service said: “I can confirm that we are aware of this ‘air ambulance’ collection and have issued warnings about it. Warwickshire trading standards service takes any reports of members of the public being deceived or misled very seriously. Where such reports are made to the service we will endeavour to investigate and take the appropriate action.
“Should members of the public have any information, leaflets, vehicle registration numbers, or descriptions of collectors etc that they feel may be of help to trading standards officers investigating clothing collection companies they believe are making misleading claims, they should contact Consumer Direct a call on 08454 040506. All information will be treated confidentially.”:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

The police won't be interested. No criminal offence has been committed. The rag trader didn't say that he operates as a charity.. The words on the sack no doubt say something very vague to the effect "please donate your clothes and help support the Air Ambulance Service".
Here's a sack used by the airambulanceservice.org.uk in another area of the country... No mention of charity...
The Salvation Army does exactly the same.. it uses a rag trader to collect unwanted clothes. The rag trader gives 58% of his income to the charity, but keeps 42% for himself. The Army chalked this up as "administrative costs".
