not from personal experience (i am an apple junkie)
but both my dad and brother have the samsung mp3 players and rate them very highly

a quick google says you can get a 16gb version with radio for under £100
i dont know which exact model they have but the yp q1 diamond looks familar

dad has also had the sandisk mp3 player with radio in the past too - and loved it (only replaced it due to loss)

(iirc they also have removable memory cards - so you could have a 'classic' memory and a 'rock' memory if you need more space!)

With radio? Hmm, thats a tricky one- you wouldn't get DAB radio with that sort of price limit and a radio that is not DAB may not be so good on the move. Have you thought of a better phone?

As far as very cheap models go (I would say it would need to be very cheap to have that much space, have a radio for that price) I cannot comment on brands as I have only ever had Sony, Apple (nano) or Creative. I'd say Sony are best. But thats beacuse they last a very long time, don't mind being dropped and have decent carry cases available. They also play with great quality.

Look, I'd say you have two options:

Either shell out on an expensive but worth it item, get some form of insurance or buy from John Lewis who offer a 2 year guarentee, Amazon who have excellent customer service or elsewhere. Then get a very giid quakity case. The good thing about well known brands is that they tend to have good quality carry cases and some which even look good!

Or you can get something from ebay. Try to look through the outlet shops first. Argos have one, I am sure there are others. You quite often get a warrenty that way. I bought a pair of bluetooth earphones from an Outlet shop a few years back. They went wrong after 10 months, I got a full refund. No problems aside from having to mail the product back- which they paid for.

I've just sold a phone and wouldn't use one as a player , I basically want my old creative zen but a better make so it doesn't crash/break.
I have had so much trouble that I couldn't buy a Creative product again but since Amazon gave me my money back it's just sat in my account. I'm not on ebay either and can't see a day when I will be really. Not sure what to try as it's surprising how little choice there is when you want specific features!
Maybe I should continue doing without one and see if anything new comes out:(

I might check that out as I like Samsung! My music collection is already over 8GB so it makes it harder..

If its any help, I had a Creative (not sure which model, it had a sideways on screen and was 16gb) it froze after 21 days, Amazon refunded me. I bought a Sony Wirefree MP3 player. I got 8gb for around £120, no idea what they are now. Highly rate this player, they also make it in 16gb and I think 32gb also. When I need a new player it will be a Sony as they just seem to have such great quality and don't mind me dropping them.

Creative are junk.. Sony, Samsung or Sansa will have something you'll like for that price.

That looks lovely if I can be shallow! I currently use my old Samsung phone (D900) and it looks similar.

I loved my old creative even though I had to carry a pin at all times:mad:
I like SONY but the last two produts of theirs i've bought haven't been good. Can you move any songs to your player?
I have some songs that i've "found" (:o) online so aren't protected etc

Not sure what you mean by "can I move songs to my player" it has an 8gn space and its almost full. The stuff didn't get on there any other way then me moving it to my player. Did this via the supplied USB port. Have stuff from Amazon, Napster, CDs (transfered to WMP) and various other DJ website mp3 downloads. All transfered without a problem.

I do have issues with Sony Ericsson phones (cannot tranfer anything to or from them with my computer) but it appears the Sony MP3 players are very different and very easy to use. Most have a "drag and drop" function which makes them very easy to understand.

I would go for the Samsung YP-R1. I have one of these and they are well worth the discounted prices you can get them for.

You can actually get the 8GB version for under £50, so why not buy two and keep one as a spare??? Two are still cheaper than 16GB!!

Make sure you install the latest firmware.

  • The Sansa Clip is a brilliant cheap MP3 player. My dad's had his for over 2 years and it's still in great shape! There's a Sansa Clip+ 8GB on Amazon for £39.99, but it also has radio and a MicroSD slot so you can increase the capacity. I believe it's capable of using up to 32GB cards, but don't hold me to that.

I have read that some players need their own software and won't accept downloads you have "found" online. Probably misunderstood

Some do, but most work with WMP and this is already installed on most PCs. The Sony I have didn't need anything downloaded but if it did, they normally come with their own CD or link to a website to download whatever is needed with full instructions on what to do to download it safely. Takes 2 mins max.
