3 homes by my old house including the one I rented had agri ties the one I lived in the farmer wanted to turn in to a holiday let he was refused but knocked it down turned it in to a bigger house for himself to retire in to as his son went in to the big house, they had 3 houses built with agri ties for farm labourer's tried to get all ties lifted when he could no longer afford or needed workers refused all 3 refused, a bungalow further up the lane again agri tie the farmer retired to it as son went in to the main house husband died then the wife, son tried to sell by removing tie again refused he has tried 7 times he rents this out now and it is a bit run down now it is empty most of the time as he will not keep it up to date. Many farmers around me have had homes built in the guise of for farm workers and yet they have none they were for sons etc . Some brag in the local they will rent them out for big money, and if they do not get it will sell them down the line . ALL have agri ties .
I objected to 2 being built as the farm size was at odds with the need for workers ie 60 acres and the father and son worked at home was incorrect, it was clearly a home for the son and his new wife the planner said it would probably get through it did but with a tie , the 2nd farmer wanted to build one behind me in a field he did not get permission as this farmer had already built 2 and was taking the mick he got them through under barn conversions with no ties, this one he said was for a worker planners said he could give one of the barn conversions over to a worker , he had no workers and had no workers for the last 15 years.

You don't say where you are. Some authorities are stricter than others with the policing of Ag-ties, but if, as it appears, you have no intention of attempting to comply, then this bungalow's probably not for you.

Most ties are pretty similar, but some have variations in the wording which help those moving or retiring from outside the local area. I even know of one where the words 'in agriculture' were omitted by accident! This limited the property to buyers from 'the locality,' deemed to be a radius of about 20 miles.

A local landworker might be well miffed if the only affordable place in his area is snapped up by people not on farming wages....

You are dead right, it's the locals, via the Parish Council, who shop people who are seen to be 'not of the soil.'

In our village their deliberations over anything raised, from hippie benders to ruts in the carriageway, are reported monthly in the magazine, so everyone soon knows if there's something dodgy going on.

I imagine it's much the same elsewhere.

Correct about the locals and understandably so.

The market is awash with properties for sale. Why do you want this one .... because you think you're getting it cheap and you're hoping the rules won't apply to you?

I'd walk away .... just as I've seen many people around here walk away. It really isn't worth the stress. Go find somewhere with no restrictions on it and relax.
