Whoops apologies.
With an unusual item though I would be more inclined to go out to a straight auction and see if it runs away.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. if you are new to ebay as you say you are open to scams and problems, IMHO I would only sell something like that on ebay if I was 100% sure of what i was doing. Good luck!
I would do what Seashore has said. I would not sell items on Ebay valued at that amount. Deffinately with on line bidding at the auction house & they will get the best possible price they can for you & they will probably suggest you put a reserve on the items anyway. Find out what their fees are before hand.Best wishes,

With all due respect, it's £400 per item we are talking about. Do people really think that's a huge amount for ebay? There are thousands of items well above that level. I would, and do, sell many items for that amount of money. You have to, if you want to make money without working your wotsit off.0

No it isn't a huge amount for ebay but I think there is a concern that OP freely admits they have only sold a few 'bits and bobs' on ebay, so I think many of us perhaps think that isn't ideal for someone selling high end goods.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Guys
I really really appreciate all your really well thought out answers. I am new to selling that is for sure. I have a grand total of 7 sales and I must admit that I do have a really soft side and my scam radar is not well tuned at all.
They are probaby the ony 2 higher end items that we have aquired apart from things left to us from relatives that while having high value would never be sold. These cost us about £20-£30 in total so I almost fell off my chair when I saw the valuation.
I will take them to an auction house in town and have a word as I know there is an auction coming up soon that deals with that kind of item. I just feel odd somehow going to a proper auction house but as very well advised, I don't have the experience yet on ebay0 -
Real auction houses are great fun, I almost treat mine as a day out as you get some good people to talk to and a lot of banter. Even smaller houses now have online sites, my locla one is tiny yet they had several thousand pounds of bids from a hK buyer a few months ago as he's seen the items online and phoned up for more details.
If you go to here you can actually hear live auctions on some days of the week:
