Quick growing flowers from seed?

We are sorting out our garden and planning to have a party mid-September (hoping the weather will be good as our house is tiny!). I'm wanting to sow seeds in pots/trays over next few days ready to plant in borders in a week or two. The problem is we've very little money and big borders. When money permits I'll get some shrubs but in the meantime is there anything I can sow that will look good in September (doesn't need to be flowering just looking good)? Was thinking of Nasturtiums and Morning Glory but is it too late to sow them? We stay in Perthshire (middle of Scotland).

Sorry if there's already a thread about this but I did search and couldn't see any. Also tried google but again had no luck. Thought the best option would be to try all the helpful people here (been reading your posts for a while.....).

  • Can't think of anything to grow from seed so quickly but Homebase (well at least Bingley branch was) selling loads of summer bedding off cheaply when I was in at the weekend. Lots of Bizzie Lizzie and Marigolds. They would keep going till September and give a bit of instant colour. If you could afford to spend a little more they also had reductions on some standard Fuschia, rose bushes and other bits and bobs, including veg plants. No doubt this late in the season other Garden Centres will be selling off a lot of their stock too.

Yep, growing in 6 weeks isn't possible unless you're happy to have the ground covered in mustard!

I agree it would be a struggle even the quickest violas take 9 weeks
I did google to see what would flower in time and found out that cannabis seeds flower in 6 weeks. sadly the Police might have something to say,
why not try asking on freecycle as our local one has had loads of plants offered recently
