Second Chance Offers...

...do they annoy anyone else or just me?

I was recently in an apparent bidding war for a book I would quite like. I bid my max amount as I was going to be away (which was a fair old amount - with P&P only a few pounds under what it would have cost to go and buy new), and one other member forced it upto and slightly above this amount.

Now that memeber hasn't paid, and it's been offered to me at my max offer. We were the only bidders. Ordinarily, I quite like the chance to buy an item I wanted, but not when the bid might have been as low as 99p if the fool that didn't pay hadn't hiked it up.

I'm going to decline the opportunity, and take my chances if it is relisted. However, I was wondering if anyone else gets narked by Second Chance Offers when a bidding process only involved two bidders, or am I having a grumpy day and should go back to bed?!

One point of view is that you should be prepared to pay your maximum bid, so you should take up the offer - is it worth the hassle to wait for another opportunity.

However, I totally agree with you. It seems silly to have to pay more just because someone wanted to have a bit of 'fun'? Not as bad as competing against shill bidders, but close. I would be tempted to look elsewhere.

  • If you have two of the same items to sell, are you permitted to offer a second chance offer?

Yes you are. If you are happy with the bid the second highest bidder has made, you are allowed to make a second chance offer.

There are loads of benefits to be gained from this. You don't pay a listing fee, only a FVF if the buyer accepts your offer. You list one item only thus getting higher bids if 2 people are interested. And you don't have to wait for days until your second item ends if you list it after your first one ends. HTH.

I'm always suspicious that the person bidding against me was the seller, THUS I NEVER take up a second chance offer.

    Anyone else think this??

  • Yes Kim, that was my thought too as I read the posting from DrFluffy.

I often list one item and sell duplicate items on second chance for the reasons listed above, I have also bought on second chance offers. I don't think it necessarily means shill bidding if you are offered a second chance.

I rarely accept second chance offers, especially where the price was really hiked up. The few times I've had this, a bit of research made me very suspicious that the person that outbid me was a friend of the seller (for example, seeing the same thing happen with the same buyer and seller on other listings).
  • On the odd occasion I have two or three identical items to sell, I only list one, and if the second bid is high enough i will make the a second chance offer, and it is genuine. Otherwise I just list it as a new item and hope for the best.
The more I read these threads the more cynical I get about other people out there not being genuine like me! How depressing!! I just hope my buyers are not reading MSE's forums and still have a gilded view of life!!
  • iam certain that second chance offers are a ploy. i have been bidding against somebody in the past too and become suspious(spell???). i let them win, and lo-and behold a second chance offer!!
wouldn't touch it, although i did offer the original starting price and enquire why the original buyer didn't complete.
its worth checking the other bidders profile.

It doesn't always mean that the the winning bidder didn't complete it usually means they have 2 or more of the same item.
