Petrol or Diesel?

Am thinking of changing my car in the next 12mths. I've always had a small corsa/fiesta size car, and it's always been petrol (the only time I've ever driven a diesel was about 20 odd years ago, with no power steering, and sounding like a tank lol) I know they've come a long way since then, but am unsure of the advantages of a diesel car over a petrol one.
I'll still be looking at the corsa/fiesta size..Don't do a huge amount of milage - 10 miles to work and back and a 40 mile round trip to my mums twice a month. Is a diesel the way to go? Are they more expensive to repair/service? I really am a diesel novice and would appreciate any guidance!

If you are looking to buy new or nealy new you could try the whatcar comparison tool. Fill in the boxes regarding the type of motoring you do and it will tell you the cheaper option

Your mileage is very low and the extra cost of a diesel would make a better bet. You could also run into problems with particulate filters as the car would hardly get warm on your short runs.

    Best to stick to petrol.

If you have a look around on here you will find more threads that go into it in a bit more detail.

It does depends what car you are looking at.

Diesels are quieter than they used to be, but buy at the cheaper end and they are still noisy in the cabin as cheaper cars don't get adequate soundproofing - money has to be saved somewhere and this is where the spec is reduced.

Small diesels are for driving instructors.

I wouldn't buy a diesel if I were doing that mileage. It'll never get to optimum operating temp/speed and if it has a particulate filter (DPF) it'll get clogged up and could leave you with a large repair bill. I personally wouldn't consider diesel unless I was doing 20k a year plus.
