I'm off to US with my American girlfriend who know lives and works in UK. Does she need to get medical insurance for US or can she just walk into any local hospital over there? Sounds a strange question but we are not sure given the changes that Obama is bringing in.

You do NOT want to visit the USA without medical cover no matter what your status. Obama may be trying to change the situation but it will take years to get anything done. Travel insurance for a healthy young adult doesn't cost much at all. Don't leave home without it!42 years of experience in the insurance industry.
And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!0 -
Yes!!! I got sick last year and man - did I resent paying $125 to see the doctor for antibiotics! And I was kicking myself for flying with insurance.
The new healthcare bill has not developed anything like the NHS. It just means everyone has access to medical insurance. So no more excluding diabetics, or making you pay thousands for insurance if you're a high risk. The only 'free' insurance is in some very specific circumstances.
She would be just another uninsured person over there. Get travel insurance as medical costs are very high there!0 -
If she is a British resident i.e. lives in the UK full-time then she needs travel insurance like anyone else going to visit the states.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
