Help with insurance

My car ins was due in july and i did not wish to renew so i cancelled diret debit and as was no form sent to cancel from old insurers left it at that. Have new insurance but old company now say policy is still active although i have emailed them to say i wish it cancelled. they also want to charge me for what they say is cancelling the policy mid term. can they do this. please help

Did your old policy have 'automatic renewal', if so you would of had to cancel your policy with the insurance company.
Take it you emailed them after renewal date, if so you would probably be liable for cancellation payment, you need to check your renewal papers, it will be on there
