windows 98 SE and broadband

we are eventually going to get the internet( rather than using MIL's!)
only we don't know whether our computer with windows 98 SE 116 mb RAM and 30 GB hard drive (27 GB free)would cope with broadband (previously had dial up when my brother had it) or to go for a new PC which isn't very moneysaving!
just seen this on currys:
sorry can't do link!

'EI SYSTEM 313 PC and Monitor Only 039882
Intel Celeron D processor, 256MB RAM, 80GB hard disk and DVD Rewriter. All for our lowest ever price!'
£299
HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE!

    Hi eveyk
I think you'll be ok with Windows 98SE.
If you want to make sure then check with the ISP company that you're going to use and see what are their 'Minimum System Requirements' (Look on their website)

W98SE works perfectly on broadband. I have had a W98SE system connected to broadband using a USB modem, and through ethernet (to an ADSL modem/router). Both ways worked fine, and downloaded at the same (2Mb) speed.

I've still got my old W98SE computer running on the network. It downloads at the same speed as my latest dual core XP Pro 64bit system on the same network.

This is true. Microsoft have stopped support for W98SE, so you wont get any updates for new vulnerabilites found. XP is still supported so it will still get the monthly updates.

If you get a modem/router for your new broadband connection. You could still run your old computer on the internet, as well as any new computers you buy. Both computers could use the internet at the same time.

WIN98 is no longer getting updates from M$ but you can install your own software firewall for free and use an alternative browser for free. If you connect to the net using a router, you will have the added protection of being behind a hardware firewall.

The internet is very slow compared to a network. Therefore, if a machine can run on the network, be it win95, 98 etc, then it will run on the internet.
The min spec from ISP's is rubbish and should only be believed when you need to use USB modems.
