Turned Down By iProtect

Hello,
I made an application to iProtect for mortgage protection insurance for myself and my partner. We already have this with paymentshield but I've been reviewing all our insurances and the iProtect quote was much cheaper. I made an application last week.
Today however I received an email saying:
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept your application. The decision has been made on referral to AmTrust International Underwriters Ltd,
who are the Insurers for i:protect; and we have been advised that your application does not meet the criteria
they have set for this particular scheme.
I've never been turned down for insurance before! What are the reasons they may have turned us down? How can I find this out? Neither of us has ever been made redundant and we are not in high risk sectors. We only took it out because we don't have large savings and having just moved, thought it to be better safe than sorry.
Also, one of the questions for any insurance is 'have you ever been turned down for insurance'. Does this mean I'll now have to say yes to that question. I really can't see why they have turned us down.
It's not a major problem, just a bit depressing as the monthly payments were half of what we pay now for the same cover with paymentshield. Very frustrating. Perhaps I would be better going through an IFA for this insurance?:o
