Just buying a new car and my wife will use it occasionally to learn in. Who are the best Insurance providers when it comes to Provisional drivers?

Changes all the time, go through all the comparison sites, it mght be beneficial to await your insurance renewal before you add your wife, only way to know is to ask your insurers how much it would cost to add her to your present policy. good luckNo longer posting on freebies or comps0 -
Check with your insurers - alternative will be to buy a learner driver policy with someone like Collingwood which I think can be bought n a monthly basis.
Your insurers might not charge too much for adding your wife as she will always be under supervision until she passes her test. Will depend on her age, type of vehicle etc. etc. The real increase is likely to be when she passes her test and takes to the roads on her own as an inexperienced driver. There may be an inexperienced driver excess to pay together with a hike in premium.0 -
Son aged 17 passed his driving test this morning, hurray no more mum and dads taxi service required.
Spoke to insurance broker Adrian Flux to inform them and was told we now need to pay an extra £1200. So thats £1700 in June to start the policy for a provisional driver and now another £1200. We weren't informed of this when we took out the original policy.
So for those with provisional licences, watch out, there is a nasty suprise you may not be aware of coming.

Hi all,
I am now 20 but when I was learning, I had my insurance with Quinn Direct. They were by far the cheapest company wanting around £800 for 3rd party (Not sure whether it was with fire and theft as well) from February to October. When I passed it rose to around £1000-1100 if I remember correctly. They were a very good company to deal with, and I had the added bonus of being able to drive any other car 3rd party, which came in very handy.
Not sure how I managed to get such low insurance costs (I'm at around £500 at the moment with 3 years no claims) but it may be due to the fact that I lived in the middle of nowhere with a fairly low powered car (An M reg subaru justy) but I am greatful for it! I hear horror stories of young people with just MASSIVE insurance bills and I can only sympathise with them. All I can suggest is to not get a car that has a 'boy racer' tag along with it, like a Nova or a Corsa or something like that!
Cheers,

Hi, firstly, you should get a spouse discount which sometimes can be quite good and as previous poster has said, you will probably find the premium will increase when your wife passes her test but at the same time, if she is over 25 then it should'nt be too bad, especially after a years worth of driving experience after passing.0

Hi, have you tried The Insurance Factory? apparently they are giving some good quotes for young male drivers. Also, the premium should drop quite a bit for him after a year claim free driving. Also, are you a named driver on the policy as this can help, or even better, a female named driver0 -

Rates have risen significantly over the past couple of years for reasons well documented on this site. Quinn were also taking on business at lower than average rates to up their income and were stoppped taking on new business for a while. Unfortunately those levels of rates that you quoted in your post are unlikely to be available now for new drivers.0 -
Hi, I am female, 21 and took out Collingwood learners insurance this year from February. I paid £489 for the full 12 months policy with a clause stating that when I pass my test and inform them (as I did this afternoon - yippee!) :j I will get a refund of the unused days' policy fee excluding their intermediary fees (under £50). So far so good, am eagerly awaiting their response as I need the refund money for my new insurance!
For future information: my new insurance quotes are not coming in lower than £718, which is in line with what my twin paid for her 1st year.
I was most drawn this company as my twin sister had great problems with Quinn Direct who charged her one provisional insurance fee, then charged her something like a £70 change to policy fee when she passed on top of increasing her premium as expected. The exit fee to cancel was unfavourable. They also wouldn't accept her Pass Plus dicount at the same time as 1 years No claims (from driving provisionally) which was not mentioned on their site or conditions.0 -

Congratulations.
My daughter had an annual policy, on a pay monthly basis, (no extra charge, apart from a £1.50 handling fee each time she paid, and with the option to pay for a block of months)
She passed near the end of the month, and got something like a day back about £1.80, within a week.0 -
Check with your insurers and see what quotes come out. Mine at age 22 for a new learner wasn't very expensive (sub 500) for a policy in my own name. I think as a named driver it would have been ok too.0
