music downloads update!!!!

I apologise if this has been covered before, i did do a search but am still confused!

I have an ipod and often find that the music I want isn't available on itunes.

I want to download legally and have visited several sites, but how do i know which are ipod compatable and which aren't?

Please don't suggest buying more CDs as I'm running out of room so this really isn't an option!

Any help would be appreceiated

Thank you

correct me if i'm wrong, but if you download an mp3 tune to your hard drive from any site you should be able to drag and drop files from the location of the downloaded tune on your hard drive to itunes

Yes any music file in MP3 or AAC formats should be completely compatible with your iPod. Just be careful with other restrictions (copyright protection issues) as they are different on different sites (e.g. you may have to pay regular subscription as opposed to a one off fee to some sites to be able to play their music).
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

The current iPod won't play music that is encoded using Microsoft's software, usually these are 'WMA' files. The Ipod won't play even if there is no copy protection on the files.

For audio, the iPod will do MP3, AAC, AAC Protected and Apple Lossless, WAVs and Audible Audiobook codecs.
  • copyright was the big one for me, when i brought my new mp3 player the sony thing i went onto a site and brought £20 worth of downloads... only to find they were copyrighted and my mp3 player wasnt compatable... then i goes onto the connect store (sonys own download site) only to find that each track is twice expensive  i should have stuck with me old drag and drop :rotfl:

I'm assuming they weren't mp3 files then as they are never copyprotected and I believe sony players can only play ATRAC and MP3.

Pedantic note: all music is copyrighted, that is the legal protection, and only some to most are copyprotected, which is the physical protection.

  • Than you everyone! I am a bit blonde when it comes to stuff like this and need it explaining in really simple terms! So, just so i know I've got this right, I can go to a site like napster and as long as the music says it's MP3, AAC, AAC Protected i can download it, store it in itunes and put it on my iopd?
  • Napster is out I'm afraid, as quoted from their FAQ's
The Napster music that is downloaded to your computer is in Window Media Audio (WMA) format at 128 Kbps stereo. We use Microsoft Windows Media Digital Rights Management software to make sure all the music you have is fast, safe and protected.

MSN music is also WMA. I don't know what places like Woolworths and HMV use. Just make sure you check before you buy.

Way around it is to burn your copy-protected wma files onto a CD, then rip the tracks from the CD as mp3 files. Maybe not very economical for you moneysavers, but it's better than having bought downloads that you can't play!
