Jewellery appraisal

My mum has given me some gold jewellery to get appraised and I was wondering what is the best way to go about it without getting ripped off. I was just thinking about going to a few jewellers. I also have some coins that I want to sell.
Thanks.
Thanks.

If you are getting any gold valued at a jewellers my advise is always say it is for home insurance purposes as this way they will give you its real worth.
If they think you are selling it they maybe tempted to give you a lower value and try and buy it from you themselves.0 -
Insurance valuation - is pointless all they do is give the highest valuation to replace from the most expensive shop.(And there is no way you will get that on the second hand market).
the coins will more or less be scrap value. Any jewellery will be the same. And the second hand piece value will be just over that.
Unless you have something very old/branded/unusual value will be different.
hope this helps0 -
That's a bit of a leap if you don't know what coins they are. For coins it would be worth researching collectors and specialists to get them checked some can be worth depending on rarity and price
and thats why i put "Unless you have something very old/branded/unusual value will be different."
There are many coins that have a coin collectors book price. Again for some of them try getting that price very hard.0 -

Apologies the way you wrote it it just sounded like you were talking about the Jewellery0 -
no probs....i am no poet lol
i worked in a jewellers that sold second hand jewellery for 5 years. (also bought in)
Some of the stuff we sent to get melted down was sinfull.
I did save the odd bit lol Unfortunatly the ex-wife kept most of it after my divorce...Should have let it get melted down lol
Its amazing how many old gold watches are worth hardly anything..Always liked watches.0 -

I am also extremely surprised at how little some things sell for, I go to a number of auctions and the stuff they knock down for a few pounds is incredible. I did make the mistake of buying things purely because they were so cheap, but of course certain jewellery items are almost worthless nowadays. At the last but one auction i went to she actually remarked she was selling at less than scrap value so although with buyer premium the buyer was buying at scrap value the seller was actually getting about 25% less than scrap value.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Hi EL123
You say that you want the jewellery valued. The first thing to do is to be sure what you intend to do with these items (keep them, sell them, pass them on to the family etc), this establishes what type of valuation you require.
You also mention your fear of being "ripped off". Do you mean paying an excessive amount for the Appraisal and Valuation Report? Or is your intention to sell these items of jewellery as well as the coins and you want to be sure of getting a fair price?
I would be delighted to advise further once I know what your requirements are.
No, I am not touting for business, just trying to help.
Kind regards

I want to be sure of a fair price, but I expect if I go to a few jewellers then I should be ok. I was thinking/hoping that they did appraisals for free, or am I being naieve?!
Thanks.0 -

They 'may' appraise for free if you tell them you are thinking of selling, but many no longer offer any free appraisal service.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
