    I can now run Partition Magic - is partition-tool likely to do more than that?

    It shows C as type: NTFS, status: Active, Pri/log: primary
    then under that is just has (*), type extended, status: none, Pri/log: primary
    then under that it has another entry quoting the same size partition which says:
    Local Disk(*)Type: PqRP status:none, Pri/log: Logical

    Both those entries show that the full size of the partition is in use, which is not correct.

    Ah, just come up with something on Google, seems that Partition Magic has denoted the partition as type PqRP because it regards it as unstable. no doubt due to an error by me in defining the new size. Well that's enough for me today, I'll have another go tomorrow. Thanks for your efforts Browntoa.
