If you block someone on MSN, do they have any way of knowing that you've done this, other than the obvious, of them being unable to contact you?

It is possible for someone to check if you have blocked them. There are several web sites that facilitate this e.g. http://www.msnblockchecker.net/
For someone to detect that you have blocked them you need to be online at the same time they run the test and also not have configured your allow list.0 -
Yes it is possible, there is software and websites out there that can check if you have blocked someone or they have blocked you, but to go to the trouble of finding out if someone has, what can they do about it?:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
