Belkin router modem and storm

Hi Just wondered if someone could enlighten me. I have a Belkin router modem and we had a storm the other night and it went wrong.
I phoned Belkin and they got me to do something. They got me to connect the cat cable between ports 1 and 2 and then 3 and 4 after all resets and power downs had failed to work to short them out. This cured the problem but what did this actually do?
Also what did the storm do to it to upset it? I asked them what I could do to prevent it happening again but they said nothing except switch it off. I just find it strange what it did yet without blowing it completely.
I seem to have lost port 1 but 2 to 4 work so something must have blown.
Just trying to learn so interested in any info.

Belkin have a lifetime guarantee, so suggest you use it, and keep stum about the storm..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

If you are at home next time a storm is going on, or one is due in your area. It is always worth unplugging your broadband/dialup modem from the phone socket untill the storm has passed. If you get a strike on your phone line, a telephone is cheap to replace, but this could affect/frazzle any modems/routers/computers you have wired to your network. These aren't so cheap to replace if they blow. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Hi HappyHero,
I've also got a Belkin Router which now won't power on since a storm. Was this the problem you were getting? Thanks.

Hi Woodsy, no mine was the lights messing around. If you have no lights on then its most probably the power supply. It blew on me once before and they replaced next day, very good service in that instance but they are taking ages to get through to at present.
It has one of those transformer plugs and sometimes they blow. Don't know if you can test it on anything else as they are all different usually. I put a meter on mine and found that there was no output from the little round plug that you plug in the back of the modem, so if you know anyone with a meter its quick and easy to prove. Hope I've been of some help.0 -
we had the same type problem, all lights on but no signal, ours had just lost the signal after reset its no ok.my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!0

Yes thats true, that can happen where there are no lights up. The way to check is take the round power plug out the back of the modem and put it back in after 20 seconds or so and it will all light up if its working0
