Have I slipped up? I closed both current accounts (had to phone up A&L) in order to requalify as a new customer for the purposes of the Regular saver account ('not held any A&L current accounts for three months'.) I wasn't able to close all accounts however. I had an online saver and wanted to close this also over the phone and the lady said she couldn't do that (so how do you request the closure of an OLS?) then there was a plussaver - but that's opened when you open a premier account for you - you don't 'apply' for that. She did take the £1 out of the plus saver though. So I was left with
1 plus saver nil blance
1 online saver £1 balance (cannot serve on phone and minimum balance cannot be moved out either
1 A&L ISA which I applied for in April but then didn't use (went with Halifax for 1 year fix instead) This is not a real account in other words
Now I was going to use the RAF form using my sister as the referee and me as the new customer. But I've noticed it says:
Customers recommending a friend or relative must hold a Premier or Premier Direct Current Account. New customers must open a Premier or Premier Direct Current Account and must not have an existing account with Alliance & Leicester.
If 'an existing account' means 'current account' I'd been fine as I have only just opened a premier current account as a 'new' (not in the last three months) customer. Do these dud accounts held - not current accounts and no means to transact on them - bar me or do the terms really mean to say 'current account'? It might make sense to specify that an incentive will only be paid where the first opened account with A&L is a current account (i.e. no savings) as that then allows A&L to offer further accounts and get more custom. But it does seem strange that an incentive for opening a bank account should work like this.
Does anyone know if they mean current account or any account please?
Thanks
M

My wife and myself both had OS2 accounts at the time we opened the Premier Direct accounts in February this year. I asked A&L at the time the very same question you are asking and they said they mean current account. (They must have taken a great many phone calls asking the same thing - you'd have thought they'd have re-worded the voucher when they a) went to £25 or b) went back to £50 with the 'multiple incentive exclusion' clause.
)
Anyway, we were both paid out the referral incentive, and I'm sure I've seen reports on here that ISA holders were also paid out.0 -
Thanks greatly for that prompt clarification. I had a feeling it must be that as otherwise they would have said 'any other account' surely?
But that's just saved us £100! Phew!.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0
