am I missing something here :confused: (and I may well be) I was under the impression that all ISP's are required to offer migration by law.

Also the governing body require this is done free of charge and in timely manner - can't recall how long but feel it's somewhere around the 5 day mark - if not you can report them.

True, when you're just migrating to another ISP.

As Orange don't do migrations, the only solution (as mentioned above) is to cancel and then sign up with a new ISP, which will take time.

    Of course Orange do migrations.

There are 2 sorts of ISP. BT wholesale resellers, and LLU (local loop unbundled). For LLU the kit has to be changed so you can't seamlessly migrate. To swap resellers you need a MAC code from old ISP which you give to new ISP. New ISP goes live in parallel with old ISP. Change your settings then tell old ISP to cancel account. You MAC acts as your 30 day notice IF you use it. Change-over takes 7-10 days so if you join new ISP 14 days into MAC you pay about 7 days overlap. Some ISPs need pressure to give MAC code but good ones don't.
  • No ISP can refuse to give you a MAC code. They must issue it within 5 days of you requesting it. See here.

I went from plusnet to O2 a few months back. I had no real downtime. I noticed my router was not wrking so I plugged in my O2 box and it just worked.

You cannot have more than one broadband supplier on the same phone line. The line at the moment will have Oranges tag on it. No other broadband supplier can supply broadband on that line until Orange is cleared.

You would normally be able to migrate to another product. Because Orange say you can't, they must have you connected to their own LLU equipment. There is the start of services to be able to migrate from LLU, but this isn't widespread at the moment. You will have to cancel, then reconnect to another ISP.

in the case of cable broadband i could get another isp in conjunction with my VM BB but that would be silly unless there was a valid reason
