bus passes at 60?

I was 60 recently and know and understand that due to the changes in pension age I won't be eligible to receive my state pension and my bus pass until 6th September.

I have been told (at my local town hall) that my bus pass application will not be processed until 6th September which will mean that I won't get it until a couple of weeks after that. A friend who lives in a different area has been told the same.

Is this common practice throughout England? If we're entitled to bus passes when the pension kicks in, why shouldn't we have them then?

I don't know what is the general practice.

In London one can apply up to two weeks before one is eligible so I presume one gets the pass on or near the date at which one can use it.

As alang says, depends upon local councils practices, and with impending cut backs the delays may get worse

Some councils issue them on the spot, so your experience is not universal

I used mine for the first time yesterday :) Drove to a park and ride and then got on the bus to the city centre - wonderful, no harassing, no looking for decent parking places and I saved about £6 in parking fees.

In Merseyside you still get your bus pass at 60 whether male or female.

It's apparently the "all England" ones that are no longer given at 60.

I've put in for mine also due 6th September - and should have it by then. Here you can apply up to a month before its due. Think your council is penny pinching
