Help with toilet!

Hi, I hope what I write here makes some sense! We recently came home to find our toilet constantly running water. Flushing it stops the water running for a short time but the cistern soon fills whenever water is drained from anywhere else in the house (open a tap and let the water pour for a minute). Once the cistern fills to a point water continually flows down the tube on the lower right of the image. The little pipe that is fed into it keeps throwing water out, until we flush it. There doesn't appear to be anything we can adjust, we've had a look around it and prodded everything in there.
The only thing that seems to stop it by putting weight onto the large pipe thing at the top left of the image. So if we push down on it, it stops.
The sound of the constantly flowing water doesn't bother me that much but I'm about to be on the receiving end from somene who's going insane from it - so if anyone has some wisdom to impart or an idea to try it'd be much appreciated! Luckily we are not on a water meter!
Does anyone know how we can fix this?
Hopefully you can see the photo here.

First reaction is that you need to adjust the float height so that it shuts off the water BEFORE it reaches the overflow pipe. Putting a weight on the valve is only forcing to to shut manually.
PS Photo still much too large.

Thank you for the reply.
I can't seem to get the image smaller!
How do we adjust the float height? We can't seem to find anything to adjust...0 -

Thanks browntoa, I have seen that but as ours is one of the newer modern toilets, it doesn't have all the same parts as that link so its not very easy to follow.
Thanks again..0 -
i think on your float there should be a clip that enables you to slide it up and downEx forum ambassador

In simple terms the blue collar (circled) which goes around the fill valve tube and to which the float is attached should move up and down the tube to allow the level in the cistern to be adjusted.

If you adjust it and its still is overflowing afterwards then we need to look at the possibility of carp having got into the valve itself or a washer needs replacing.
