Small, glossy-leafed perennial shrubs?

I have a meandering dry river bed, and at the end, I've created a scooped-out basin effect, with a "river bank". This year I've cleared all the dead-looking stuff and now it looks rather sad and bare.
I've planted some heathers, and some ferns, but would like a couple of shrubs, with glossy leaves, that grow between 1 - 2 feet, which I think is about 30 -60 cms.
I would be grateful for any suggestions, as I've had so much help from this forum.
Thank you.

hi
what is your soil like - acid/lime? Free draining or moist? Clay or sand?
How much sun and when?
Immediate thoughts are Sarcoccoca, Osmanthus, Skimmia, Ruscus - if you let us know more info we can be more specific.

Thanks for the suggestions. The soil is Essex Clay, and I've had to slice it with an axe! The area gets the sun from about 8 in the morning, until 2 in the afternoon.
About 3 feet behind the area is a row of 8 feet high conifers. I've identified some motheaten (snails? slugs?) hostas, in another part of the garden, that could be moved.
Thanks again.
