I have a 7 yr old pc on its last legs i would like to buy a new one,I would like a desktop and i assume it would be cheaper buying as a package with monitor included,I dont use it for much I occasionaly back up dvds, surf the net,and write letters, the hard drive wouldnt need to be massive as i dont store music or video.
If anyone could advise me of any good reputable places to purchase with good value/offers or a particular brand(reliable) that comes at a good price I would much appreciate it,I suppose most computers are running on windows 7 so It would need enough ram to handle it.
So it doesnt need to be Nasa class but just to run quick enough to not frustrate me too much, but im sure most systems will be speedier that my old pile of junk
Kind regards Alan :rotfl:

For what you want to do, a netbook will suffice. Screen is usually 10in but I assume you have a monitor you can plug it into if you want a bigger display. Most come with 1gb ram so upgrade to 2gb and it will run almost as fast as a £500 desktop for the tasks you mentioned. Check here for best refurb deals from under £150.

Hi Alan - you "stole" my thunder. I have just logged in to ask the same question except I would like a desk top computer which has the tower built in so as to save space. My 8 year old computer is about to give up. Has anyone recently bought a tower free computer ?
Alan - I once read (possibly on MSE) that Aldi sell computers at a reasonable price. You should ascertain how much RAM / Hard Disk you want and then look on line on eg Amazon, PC World.
I like looking at reviews and Reevoo is quite good. Good luck0 -

Any reason why you would prefer this over a laptop?0 -
Check out Dell. They have some good deals - also use a cashback site if you buy from them and google for any discount codes.0

If Last lags/about to give up means slow, it's easily fixed.
Backup data, reinstall windows, or trim your startup apps, and/or upgrade the ram, and your old pc will run like new

On a personal note I,m against getting a laptop as my young son uses my pc often for online games and surfing the web,so Im sure he would break drop it and have the screen smashed quite quickly.
With regards to my system now I would just like a new one as the one I have now is old its at least 7 years old I guy that I used to work with built it for me,I later found out that he does this by buying second hand parts from very cheaply on Ebay so the components could be very old now0 -
PC Pro magazine / web site has more reviews in the latest edition and see their 'A' list.0

You do not need new hardware. Just download and use a new free operating system instead of Windows.
See the following link for instructions:

All you need to do is download the .iso file and then burn it to a disk using the free BurnCDCC program.
When you have burned the CD, just put it in your CD drive and boot up.
You will have a new, very fast system with a full suite of free software.
That's a money saving win for you!0 -

Understood, though the question was to the hijacker of your thread.
No super bargains at the mo.... hang on for a bit to see if anything turns up.
Do you have a budget/limit?0
