I work in professional services and therefore have to complete a timesheet every day. Every minutes has to be accounted for and non-chargeable time should be limited.
T'was fairly daunting to begin with but now I'm used to it.
Oh and we have a firewall that "opens up" between 12 and 2pm and after 5.15pm. Facebook is banned entirely except for a couple of PCs in the staff room.
I say "opens up" because only email and shopping sites are allowed. Oddly this forum is available all day.0 -

They all have great responsibility, are are trusted. I don't see it as controlling them, it's simply banning the use of social networking sites on company time. What they do in their own time is entirely up to them of course. There is certainly no resentment.There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -

I've been in offices where people are sat on their own, in an office, and are not even allowed to listen to the radio. So they sit there,
That's more likely the company not wanting to pay a PRS licence, rather than them not wanting their staff to listen to radio per se.0 -
I have my own office and TBH I am would be lying if I said I worked hard. I do occasionally, but I am with Grahams boss on this. You want a coffee/ciggy/or to nip to Tescos I really have no problem as long as the work is done.
The minute it isn't I will be less than kind.
Apart from that, I regard people as adults.Retail is the only therapy that works0 -
We've just had someone join us from a public sector organisation where you had to account for every last minute and ask before going to the toilet. Seeing this person adapt to a our more casual, yet hopefully more hardworking, environment is quite funny and also pleasing to watch.
A quote that seems worth highlighting... in view of the level of prejudice, on the board, against so called 'lazy' public sector workers.

Where would we all be without Tescos.
@tre
It was the (yet hopefully more hard working) bit that made me laugh

Reports like this are often misleading.
If people are prevented accessing those sites, they will access some other sites (eg. Ebay) and will not contribute towards productive time instead.
This is same as saying "piracy costs music industry £10 billion..." etc. - as if downloaders would have bought the CDs for £10 each (what a rip off) instead of downloading tracks from internet.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0
