I have a brick as a mobile, it doesn't even have voicemail turned on. I get about one text a month and make/receive 1 call a month.
I've heard of internet on phones, but never seen it ... and as I don't know anybody, I guess I'll have to wait until I get into the civilised world again.
Seriously PN, you should make your own TV programme! I'd find it mega interesting!!
Maybe you could start with youtube and build up a fanbase from there

Moving on from this a bit, were currently looking in to wireless networking, which has multiple problems, but hope to overcome them, even if we have to have "hubs" and get rid of the wireless aspect.
Idea is basically multiple offices, and you can pick and choose where you work. Each office would have it's own "theme" as it were. For instance, one would have beanbags and bright colours, another will be minimalist, big large desk in the middle of the room etc. One more traditional pub type style. Only 4-5 of these. So you'd take your laptop, and either work wirelessly, or link in to a port, and do your work from there. Mobiles and simple network apps take away the problems of having to have a fixed desk for someone to get hold of you.
Basically this would mean various people from various departments would get to work alongside each other, which doesn't happen at the moment, as they are in their individual goldfish bowls.
Other problems associated is paperwork and keeping your own things in places....but this is a future project we aim for, so hopefully paper will be less of an item then....though it only seems to be increasing!! Obviously people would still have their own desks, but would want them using these rooms as much as poss.
It's also only good for the admin staff too. But where I'm talking about, the admin staff, health visitors, docs on their admin time could all move around to differing environments and different people.
We do think that most people would end up making a room a home though.0 -
There's seven of us in the office and we're quite a tight bunch so know a bit about each other. I know that all of us have a phone that connects to the internet and have apps, and pretty sure we're all on Facebook. 'Tis just the way of life for most youngsters that you can do anything related to your personal life through your phone I guess.
Take that away from most young people between the hours of 9-5 and I imagine most would be unhappy, start to get annoyed with a lack of understanding and would probably look for another job. Just my opinion, but I think employers who look to engage with youngsters entering the job market about how they can still have a social life during work hours but without taking the p*ss will reap benefits compared to a company who just ban everything and treat you like children. Organisations like Google, Innocent, IBM, Microsoft, Pixar, Red Bull etc. have all had papers written on their innovative and felxible methods with their staff and their companies still seem to get stuff done.
This was just general waffling by the way Pastures, not directed at anything you said.
Let them go get another job IMHO!
There are now, and will be in future, a massive number of well educated "youngsters" willing to take these peoples jobs without the need to spend much of their time wasting company money. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -

Never heard of give and take?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Never heard of give and take?
Of course I have, but, IMHO, the pendulum has, in recent years, generally moved too far towards the "taking the !!!!" area. Just ban the use of social networking sites & personal phone calls, etc. in company time and it's very simple to control. In that situation, if people don't like it, they can just go elsewhere, their choice. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -

Yes, and the person feels controlled. Never good for productivity.
IMHO of course, from what I have seen from both sides of the coin.0 -

Yes they probably will and leave you with the monkeys, it not just about paying peanuts

I disagree Graham. Just like with children there need to be boundaries. People will push the boundaries, just like children will. If you have a clear company policy everyone knows the boundaries. Often, when there are not, people in an organisation will just take the !!!! and other staff members will then get annoyed with colleagues when they do so. Smoking time is a classic example and often causes a great deal of resentment. The same goes for people that spend a lot of time on social networking sites, or taking/making personal calls. IMHO it's good for productivity when everyone knows that there are clear rules and, a ban is best. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -

Your view Stevie. I don't pay peanuts, I don't have monkeys and staff turnover is negligible.

Probably because the non smoker does not get the benefit of leaving the office for 10 mins.
Give the other person the option to leave the office, go for a walk, no resentment.
Liklihood is, they won't leave anyway. But they know they can if they wish.
It works for all the companies cleaver mentioned, and certainly works for us. I can imagine factory lines etc that it wouldn't work for, and obviously wouldn't work for forward facing staff....but for anyone else, it can work very easily.
Hardly anyone takes a full hours real break now. Probably take 3-4 10 minute breaks, have a quick walk to the shop, get a sandwich. Maybe later quickly walk to the bank and so on.
Employer actually gains 20 mins non paid time from the staff, plus extra later on after 5pm. Whereas the other place the staff will make sure they get every single minute, even if that does involve sitting at their desk completely ignoring the phone and others as they are "on lunch" and know they have 3-4 hours where they will be stuck until they can leave again.
Theres no feeling of "I must use all of my break" if you know you are free to have another one if you wish later on. So you tend to drift back to work, as theres nothing else to do.
Oh and another thing. We don't have all that "level" stuff at the decent place. The people on 80k and up, will make me a coffee, have a chat. Unheard of in the other offices, simply wouldnt happen, they are above you and you know it...especially when they ring you to make their coffee for them and take it to them. I know some of the staff there find it demeaning. Plus the gaggia coffee maker, which can only be used by the top buffs. The proles get the tesco instant coffee granules, which aint nice...so everyone ends up keeping their own stash of coffee etc. Everythings so seperated. One things for sure though, those people wouldn't be able to even sniff the 80k they take home if it wasn't for their proles.0
