York for two days with kids - ideas???

we have booked just a one night stay at the York Moat House (£65 for family of five with breakfast) so have the best part of two days to spend in York.

Kids want to do the Yorvik centre and possibly the railway museum.

  • Would recommend the NRM in York and it's FREE!

Just be aware that strike action is possible at the NRM CLICK HERE

Yes the NRM is free although parking is expensive still a good day out though Also Castle musuem is cheap, York Dungeon and if your perpared to wait Yorvic they are all close by each other so all can be done on foot. Also Shambles is a very famous street and the city centre is fantastic and full fo heritage.

York is a fantastic city full of history. Its my nearest city so we often spend time. In fact we are going next weekfor a day out followed by a shopping trip on our way back at Asda (Monks Cross)

It might bore the kids, depending on their ages, but an hour or so in York Minster's well worth it.

And like shrek said, the Castle Museum's worth a visit. They have open top buses as well I think? That usually shows you the hotspots.

The best suggestion I can think of is to go for three days :D

Also NRM is expensive for food and drink and I mean expensive, so take food with you if possible.

NRM is almost a full day out we have spent many days over the years there, and even when kids (2 girls) were young they still enjoyed it. You can go on a free trip on steam engine there.

Castle museum is a good afternoon or morning day out and cheapish to get in. You can see an old street inside there is also a watermill. Cliffords tower is just outside and is nothing special and a bit of a rip off if you sl me. Yorvik is also 10 mins walk and will be busy so be prepared to wait. I also think its a rip off but its one of those things you want to see. York dungeon again is about 10 mins walk away. Shambles is also not far away, 15 mins from Yorvik.

Yes there is open top buses and park and ride is good if you wanted to go out of town to Monks Cross/Clifton Moor.

Nice cheap walk along the river just to finish day off or tire them kids out. :)

most helpful everyone - thank you

    What is the York Dungeon?

My kids are 2 boys (11 & 8) and 2yr old girl - do you think the boys would be scared in the dungeon thing?

we are staying in the moat house which i think is near the river, so i am looking forward to a nice river walk (weather permitting)

any many thanks for the warning on the NRM strike - will have to keep my eye on that as I think we would like to visit the museum,

I felt quite ill when I visited the York Dungeon. Then again, I'm quite squeamish when it comes to seeing "rats" in a cage on a man's body. Not to give the game away or anything. It's very good though. Personally I'd stay outside with your 2yr old!

I believe that the York Dungeon is owned by the same people as the London Dungeon - gore, blood, guts. A more gorey version of the Chamber of Horrors at Madam Tussauds.

Get them to look up at the 'bosses', (think that's what they're called), big round thingies in part of the roof holding joisty/beamy things together. They were designed by Blue Peter viewers and put in place after the awful fire. Think you can also see them through a reflecting mirror...save a bit of neck-ache xgrin.gif

York Dungeon is preety scary you can see !!!!!! Turpin hanged. I went a few years ago my daughters were about 7 - 9 then. Eldest daugher doesnt like that sort of thing but youngest does. It might not be suitable it depends on if you think your kids dont like taht sort of thing.

Theres loads to see all close to each other. Dont forget the minister but I think that aint free now unless you live in Yorkshire area, you can get some sort of pass.
