How would you go about pitching an idea to a tv company? How would you get started?

I've seen some production companies specifically state that they do not accept ideas. Others even go so far as to say any pitches sent to them won't be read and will automatically be deleted without being opened.
I can only guess that this is so no one can accuse them of stealing an idea. Presumably they would rather employ somebody to generate an idea rather than having to pay someone a cut of the royalties.
That's all assumptions, it isn't my industry, I'm joint pointing out that simply writing to every production company out there is likely to result in most being binned without even being looked at.0 -
I have no idea about pitching to TV companies, but make sure you protect your idea from being stolen before pitching it to anyone.
A relative of mine naively sent a song he'd written to a famous performer who promptly stole it and credited her pianist with the composition. I don't know if you can copyright your ideas or you have already done so, but it's worth thinking about.
Good luck with it.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
It's one of those Grey areas nobody seems to know much about??? I know you would have to film a pilot episode first.Yellowlawn

I don't know about TV, but I know my local BBC radio station welcome pitches.
For TV, my guess is you would be best to approach one of the smaller production companies that already supply the big boys. If they like the idea, they would probably produce the pilot episode for you."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
