I sold an item on Ebay in August and it was posted on 25th, I've now had an email from the buyer asking where it is, I have the receipt in front of me but it was only sent first class mail not recorded. What do I need to do apart from telling him when I sent it.

You need to refund the buyer in full and then reclaim your own loss from the Royal Mail.

If you refund the buyer promptly and with good grace you will almost certainly get a positive feedback , if you try and stall too much you may end up with a neg and a chargeback.

  • So thewre'e no way that I can find out whether the parcel has been delivered, I thought that was the point of having the receipt or is that just so I can claim the money back from the Post Office.

  • If you want a delivery with a tracking number, you have to pay for Signed For or Special delivery.

You can only find this out if it was sent recorded (and even sometimes this isn't reliable). Best to refund, as suggested, and then chase up the Royal Mail yourself. Good luck.

Unfortunately proof of posting does not allow for tracking but as you say the COP allows you to do a claim against the RM.

  • OK thanks for all the advice, I'm just a bit dubious about buyer, new one and only one feedback, paid by bank transfer but strange that he's left it this long to ask where the item is, still if I can claim from RM then hopefully I'll get my money back.
One more question, how do I start the claim?

Is a receipt the same as a certificate of posting??
  • A certificate of posting is usually completed by the PO. They write on the COP the address of the person whom you are sending the parcel to. A receipt with just the amount you paid will be of no use when making a claim. You need to actually ask for a free COP.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • dont forget though, when you do make a claim, you will only receive the value of the goods, not the postage.
