Would you buy a motorhome on Ebay, is it safe?

We are looking to buy a motorhome, not one of those really huge, fancy ones, a 2 berth under 10K. Most of the dealers only sell very expensive ones, but I have looked on Ebay and it seems you can get a bargain, but can you?
Neither of us knows damn all about engines etc. Is it safe to buy a motor on Ebay, do people rip you off and is there any recourse, help etc. if you are sold a load of junk?
Thanks

I wouldn't. But then, I wouldn't spend that sort of money on anything on e-bay.0

if you go with a seller that allows you to view before bidding it will be no different than buying from an ad in a paper etc
some garages might do a quick check for you if the owners allowed you to take it for a test drive, would be worth a small amount of money for piece of mind0 -
I sold a motorhome on ebay, Twice.
The first buyer just would not pay
so I re listed the motorhome and sold it a second time, with a few emails between the buyer and myself agreeing terms of the sale I.E AA inspection, Money transfer when he had carried an inspection himself.
The buyer got the AA to carry out an inspection and contact him with the results before he travelled up to see it. he was happy with the AA result and the van
.
I also put him up for the night to save him B&B money, so not everybody is out to rip you off.
I know it is a big purchase and you have got to be satisfied before parting with your money but by agreing terms with the seller before paying should provide some peace of mind.0 -
Would certainly open up many opportunities for future cash on collection when you can travel the whole of Europe...0

It's no difference to buying a vehicle from a local newspaper. As long as you view it and check the documentation. Also if you don't know anything about engines take someone along who does,0

I sold mine via e-bay, had it up for £33k and accepted £31k.......I had it as a listed classified , flat fee if I remember correctly. The 2nd person to look at it bought it.
No problems with the transaction, they paid a cash deposit of £500 and transferred the rest directly into my bank account. Then they picked the venicle up on the following Sat morning.
Think it made it easier as it was parked on my drive, had proof of ownership,Council tax bill etc as proof of address..0 -
A friend of mine bought a huge American motor home off ebay....he got it as do-upper and had it delivered. He didn't have any probs with it.0

Have you considered posting a request on Freecycle? I'm sure there's already a precedent.0
