thanks all its so confusing!!!
she did get a payment of £117 not weds gone weds before but when she was interviewed under caution they told her bens would be suspended as from 7th july0 -
I agree with Mollycat13, she can only get IS or CTC but not both for any one period in time.
It is possible that when the person claimed CTC that she did not make the tax credits people aware that she had been getting IS for the children. Perhaps they didn't ask or perhaps they did and didn't calculate the claim correctly. Whichever they will need to contact the tax credits people.0 -

Robbie64, I'm not sure that's right. Going by my own experiences I currently claim IS+FP, am in reciept of Carer's Allowance (Maybe this makes a difference) and also receive the max CTC benefit. Both children 6 & 3yrs. My partner is out of work & not claiming hence the IS.
I've just phoned them as he starts work tom (Wehey:T)! And they've just adjusted everything accordingly...0 -
all she did was phone ctc and ask to be sent forms and filled them in so prob didnt tell them0

that is not correct, people can IS and CTC, they cant get IS and WTC. it is because the partner has moved in and now WTC is being claimed that they have to stop IS.
claim will have been backdated 93 days which is why the lump sums have been paid, award notices will clear everything up but all sounds fine to me.0 -

For people with children claiming Income Support and other means tested benefits prior to April 2004 help for children was given through the Income Support scheme in the form of a Family Premium and child personal allowances. Child Tax Credits replaced payments of IS for children from April 2004 and the intention was that by April 2005 all current claimants of IS etc would migrate to CTC for child payments. That has belatedly happened for most, but not all, people. Some people are still getting extra payments of IS for children rather than CTC.
What has happened here is that the tax credit office has began to pay CTC as IS has ended but has paid CTC for a past period when the person has received additional IS for the children. That means there has been an overpayment in the above case.
I should have wrote that IS payments for children can't be paid at the same time as CTC.0
