has he applied for the Maintainence GRANT?

    that's free for all....

The maintenance grant is not for everybody - it's means tested. If the OP is well off enough to be giving her son so much already , it seems unlikely that the family income will be low enough for him to qualify.

If he is in self-catered accomodation and you're paying for it, then I really cannot see him needing more than 40-50 quid per week at absolute most!

I mean he could buy a months worth of lunch material (e.g. bread, ham, cheese, crisps) for 15 pounds! If he's getting lunch 'out' then yeh of course it may be getting towards 3/4 pounds per lunch but then he won't do that every day. So we'll say 25 pounds for lunches/month.

The trick for 'socialising' at uni is (if you're talking about alcohol here) to buy alcohol at the supermarkets and drink that before he heads out.. Last time I checked my local, Smirnoff was a tenner for a litre, and I'm sure you can find it cheaper! Or just not buy a brand name of vodka. That should last you about 2 weeks if he's a big drinker, if not maybe more than a month. So we'll say a tenner just on the safe side, then the student will have 1 pound drinks and the clubs in Glasgow will have special deals on. So we'll say 30 quid a month here overall.

That's 55 pounds a month so far, I'm sure I could detail more stuff but if you get what I mean.

I'm off to Strathclyde in September and I'm expecting 70 pounds a week, which is what my brother got when he went 5 years ago. I still expect to be able save about 20 pounds a week from this to spend on treats like tickets to the football or something like that.
