Making the most of the IPod Touch

Hi everyone

I was just chatting to a friend today about my ipod - now i'm a bit of a dinosaur....i've had the ipod for nearly 2 years and only today did i access the internet on it using wifi....

the IPhone is much better clearly as you have internet access and don't have to be in a wifi hotspot

but in money saving fashion...i don't need an iphone....would love to hear from any real technical people out there who can advise on making the most of the ipod! :)

I've worked out that i can turn on wifi in the morning and access all my mail and then take it away and read on the train into work....also i can do the same for facebook....and do the same for the weather....

I can also go to any you tube links that friends might have sent on fb...and then they are stored on my history to watch later at a wifi hotspot

can't seem to get any apps (only checked the free ones)

Anyone care to chip in as to what else i can do? I'm sure there's loads more that i'm not aware of. I think my main motivation is to get stuff on the ipod to take out with me on days out, usually when on leave from work - or when i go camping.

thanks!

Skype you can use it with the headphones and mic to call people cheaper than you can on a normal mobile and free if your friends are on skype too.
check your emails no brainer there.

BBC News APP quite new actually downloads the stories so you can have a free newpaper everyday.

It really depends on what your interest in,

I also use appminer, it fines the latest free apps.
I bookmarked from safari BBC iplayer, so if your in a wifi spot you can watch tv shows.

Free wi fi, will find the closest wifi spots near you, like your closest McD and stuff.
Remote you can connect via the wifi to your laptops wifi and control your itunes library and play it out of your big speakers

Why cant you get any apps, you do have an Itunes account? if not get one, you not need to have credit card set up on it, and can still download the free ones.

  • As far as I am concerend the i pod has two functions It is a small computer that can link to wi fi and it is also a flash mp3 / music player. I use mine to download books, music and apps and then it is a portable music player. If you down load games it is a portable games player as well.

I had mine off santa so I am still playing with it but you can down load things like tourist guides to places and then use then whilst visiting instead of a guide book You do not have to be connected to the internet to use most downloads

Most apps you have to pay for but there is a good free slection to browse through. Look out for offers on I tunes vouchers such as £5 off, I don't know any at present.

Search on this site for free MP3 music and audio books.

I've had my iPod Touch a little over 18 months now and it's a godsend on trips!
Try downloading the iBoks app from the App Store (it's free) - there are hundreds of free books to download and read on there (Stanza is another, non-Apple, book reader product that also gives you access to free books!)
Have a rummage around the free apps - there are hundreds of free games, some complete, others limited or ad supported. As posted above, if you are having a problem buying apps (and there are loads of good ones for 59p!) you will need to check that your iTunes account is either tied to a card of some sort, or pick up an iTunes Gift Card, and add that to your account.
Some of the app developers do special offers from time to time, either offering a paid-for game for free, or at a sale price. EA did this a while ago with 6 of their games, and I took advantage on Sim City and Driver for 59p each. Others that you can get for free are Coin Dozer (one of those penny arcade coin waterfall machines!)

You can also, with the right software on your computer, download TV shows from the BBC iPlayer in the right format for watching on your iPod, though I suspect telling you what the software is probably infringes an MSE rule!

If you also own a 3g high end phone, e.g. a Nokia Symbian type, install on it Joikuspot. It creates a mini WiFi hotspot that the Touch can connect to. The Free version will allow some basic web browsing on the iPod Touch wherever you are with your mobile. The time limited trial version will give you all of the internet, email, etc. Connection speed will not be brilliant, but when travelling you will have all the functions of an iPhone.

I got myself a MiFi dongle from Three. Got it unlocked and using it with any SIM to connect to the internet with my iPod. This was really the iPhone killer for me. Just bought another MiFi yesterday and the deal has unfortunately expired now:

Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Thanks so much - this is really interesting! lol!

The thing is i have a skype phone also and so does my mother. My father bought them for himself and her last year but sadly he passed away last year, totally unexpectedly.

I now use his skype phone, but i would like to call my mum using the ipod because you are not holding it to your head.

Would you know how i can add my mum to my skype list of contacts - i don't know as i only know her skype mobile number, i don't know anything else. This is all way over her head too, she only knows that dad set her up with a mobile phone....

    any ideas

    thanks!!!!!
  • The next thing would be to know how to add skype to the ipod.....

(i know, i'm so behind! lol)

I have an Itunes account - but i didn't look there i looked at the apps store on the ipod last night....maybe i just haven't looked enough

thanks - I will have to attempt this at some point then. I got the impression last night that you cannot look at much without being connected (unless it's in your email).....so what you say is hopeful:)
