Finally got my full license today, but unfortunately I'm unable to get insurance for my family car for which my wife is the Main driver. She is with Santander Car Insurance and I've called them to add my details as an additional driver they took my details n then referred it to their underwriters and after a couple of hours called me back to say that they can't provide me cover coz my license is less than a year old.

Santander did asked me about my convictions and I had 3 penalty points for not driving without supervision on my provisional and I had a foreign licence 4 years ago and managed to get 3 points on that on a temp speed restriction zone but thats expired in 2008. Could this be the reason for their rejection...I don't know..and I've got feeling that its gonna be tough to get any provider although I'm over 30 years old.

My wife has already paid upfront for her cover last month for a full year and I'm wondering how can I get cover elsewhere and cancel this one with minimal cancellation charges.

Or is it better for me to find a cover for myself with another provider to start with, or is that allowed et all...please help me find a solution.

How can you pay for something that isn't required/allowed?

You could argue that since there is no risk to the insurer, you are entitled to full refund.
Admin charge is something they may be adamant on charging though.

No...I made a mistake in the original post, she has paid for her cover, they never quoted me or added me to the policy. I've updated my post now.

If your wife can find another insurer that will add you to the policy and you are prepared to pay the premium charged there is no reason why she cannot cancel her policy mid-term unless the policy does not provide mid-term cancellation.

Be aware that she will be charged short period rates, not pro rata and there is very likely to be a charge on top which will be defined in the policy conditions. If she is paying monthly by direct debit there will likely be an additional amount to pay and then the direct debit will be cancelled.

Insurers may have refused you cover because of the type of vehicle and your inexperience particularly if it is a high group vehicle. Your record will have made you a worse underwriting risk in their eyes. Although you are 32 you are an inexperienced driver and accident statistics show that you are more likely to have an accident than someone else of your age that has been driving for several years.

If you were charged with driving unattended on a provisional licence then are you not already named on your wifes insurance?

I was with ladybird for two years after I got my first car. I never had a problem with them, on the third year of being insured it was cheaper to go elsewhere. Call centre is uk based, big plus in my opinion.

Yes, you are right, but I changed provided when it came up for renewal last month, with the new provider I've decided not to en-roll myself as a provisional driver to cut costs. But Direct line was the original insurer and they are quoting 100% extra for adding me now as a new driver... Unbelievable....

Ladybird is quoting way too much for me...the cheapest so far are auto direct and hexagon.

But insurethebox offerd me a very good rate but the problem is the milage, coz my wife is using it for commute and busines use, it easily go pasts the 6k base milage. So I'm kinda of stuck
