Not at my local shell garage.I pulled up,tried pump,It did"nt reach,so I left.Drove past an hour later saw someone else doing the same.Shell pumps are also marked poorly.Quite often the second pump in the line is marked diesel. But when you stop next to it it only sells "premium" diesel at an extra 5p per litre.I do think this is a cynical ploy by shell. They know drivers will either not notice or fill up regardless.Unless I can reverse to another pump I will buy fuel elsewhere.I now avoid shell garages because of this.

I can fill up by parking on the "wrong" side of a shell pump.
In fact I did it a few days ago.

And I don't have a tiny car - it's an Audi A4 and the cable reached the other side of my car comfortably.

Good for you.The hose on the pump I was using needed to be at least three feet longer to reach the filler cap. Before you ask,I was parked close to the pump.

No matter which station/pump I use, I can never get it on a round pound figure. I always end up stopping at x.97, .98, or .99 then give it a little press and still manage to go over to xx.01 :o

My last fill up I just stopped altogether at 19.99 :p

Lol reminds me of a comedy sketch I saw on tv ages ago, the cashier had a button to add the half penny to the screen of the pump after a guy had spent ages stopping it exactly on the £1.00. I found it funny as it had happened to me so many times back then, when cash was still the King.

On another petrol pump theme why did they do away with the clip that meant you could pump hands free? I was in Belgium last week and topped up for less than £1 a litre and just flicked a little lever on the handle and could let go and relax until it was full and the click of the pump deactivated the device and stopped the flow, the States still have this too, really handy when you are pumping 65 litres of fuel.

also please realise you can fill up from both sides and this is mainly aimed at women but for gods sake have your payment ready instead of rummaging about in handbag for for 5 mins

Sexist man alert!! Both your posts on here have been aimed at women drivers, of course we all know men make better drivers! :p

At my local BP you get told off and asked to move your car if you attempt to pull the hose over your car to fill up on the wrong side!

And who still pays by cash for this stuff, just pay at the pump with your card and get out my way, causing extra queues wasting my fuel making me sit there 5 more minutes with my engine on while I wait for you to get your weeks shop from the bloody convenience store lumbered on the forecourt. And I understand its a MoneySaving board, but really, I dont think 1 or 2p every 2 weeks is going to hurt anymore but the oldest most miserly Auditor

Don't you have an ignition switch then?

Still have it on some HGV pumps- perhaps not public ones thou.

I guess it will be extra maintenance cost or insurance/safety requesting removal.

I just jam the filler cap under the lever that does the job. 75 litres takes a longgggg time to fill. :)

I've never had any comment made when I've done it, which is quite often. More than a few times, when I know the hose won't reach around the Land Rover, I have reversed through instead.
Got a few funny looks, but nothing else.

Safety was my thoughts until I saw it in America, maybe it caused problems with people saying the pump was stuck, I only wanted £10 etc. A lot of garages I used in the States required payment up front and could set the amount pumped from the kiosk.
