Network Printer

Options
I'm missing something here....:o
Have my HP colour Laser 1600 connected to my Linkstation, I can navigate to the printer, I can install the printer, I can set it to the default printer and I can print a test page. If I try to print a document it comes up with;

"windowns cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup"

and

"Spooler subsystem app stopped working and was closed"

Event viewer is not giving me and indication as to why the errors have occured, It just says the service was restarted.....

  • Before you print, try clicking on the start menu, going to run and typing 'cmd' (or just typing in the search bar, if you have vista/windows 7). Then at the command prompt type 'net stop spooler', wait until that's finished, then 'net stop spooler' (all without the quotes). That manually restarts the thing that may be giving you the problem and could work.

    Howeverrrrrr, my workplace has about 8 of these, and they're not the network version (does yours have the actual ethernet socket in the back, or are you using it via USB?). HP have basically not made their software very well (potentially on purpose), which means that if you're trying to use the none-network versino over a network via the usual windows sharing mechanism, it just breaks down on a regular basis. The fix I gave you above generally works, but you have to do it every single time you print and it's really annoying. If you don't have the network version, and you don't *need* to have it networked (by which I mean, it won't physically kill you to plug the USB wire in) then it's far, far easier just to find a way to use it directly.
  • This is a problem with your drivers. HP's really can be useless sometimes.

    Go to HP's website and download some updated drivers for your printer.

    Sorted...
    Apparently Vista has trouble communicating with Buffalo products.
    Vista uses NTLMv2 session security and Buffalo uses the older LM or NTLM.
    Change the network security settings as per the Buffalo website, reinstalled the drivers and I can now print.......
