I think that is a reasonable amount.
I always think that postage is not how much the mail company charges but also packaging etc. It would be much worse to skimp on the packaging to make it cheaper simply to discover half the goods were taken or damaged.
I recently bought a largeish article and happily paid £45 postage and the seller refunded me £20 when she sent it as she had overestimated. I wasnt expecting the refund at all and wouldnt have minded the extra cost as thats what I was willing to pay when i bid.
  • I think your postage costs are fine, even maybe cheap. I sell a lot on ebay and always add £1.20 to the actual post cost, no-one has ever queried it, but if they did then as you explained, i'd tell them its to cover listing fees, paypal fees, packaging (they don't know I get my packaging materials for free, perks of my OH's job) and my time. i think you need to tell that person to get a life!!!!

I wouldn't of answered such a petty email. She knew the costs when she was bidding.
I once had a demonic German lady demanding a refund of 15p because I had 'overcharged' her.

How did she know how much packing cost :p

Ebay pedants wind me up - I got a message about a year ago from someone complaining that my P&P had been £2.50 and yet the postage was only £2.10. I pointed out that the packaging cost over 40p, and I had *lost* money on the P&P, and asked if they would like to make up the difference since this sort of pedantry was important to them. I didn't hear back! Still got good rep though!

Then again, I've also had messages from people wanting to pay me for my under-estimation of postage. I wouldn't hear of it!

IMO - Not overcharging p&P, I get a bit fed up with people complining that they aren't just paying the face stamp value. I don't make profit onn my packaging in fact I reckon I actually lose money because I DON@T factor in things like petrol and shoe rubber and sustenance for the loooong journey to the PO and fags (also for the journey) and kenneling for my 6 dogs for the duration of the time I am at the PO.

Tell her to GET A LIFE and stop ruining yours! I'd be adding her to my BBL too.

I'm a little bruised at the moment, does it show? I only just started selling again after a horrible time on Ebay about 6 months ago and it just doesn't hold the same fun for me again yet. LOL! Only started again because I HAVE to get rid of some clutter so if things get bad again, I just gonna chuck whole load in bin!

    LOL... lemme see....

    3000 items per year @ average of £1 P&P per item (Okay, £1.50 since introduction of P&P) = £4500 for P&P.

    Postage generally £0.84 per item = £2520.

    That leaves £1980. Padded envelopes @ average of £0.20 each = £600.

That leaves £1380. Packing tape, pens and bubble pack, say £280

That leaves £1100. 2 mile round trip to PO every day, inc Saturday = 730 miles. Government figures for running a 2000cc diesel car = £0.40 per mile = £292.

That leaves £808. Oh yeah, the big, hidden cost... listing fees & paypal.

6000 items @ £0.99, though most are more, with gallery, £0.35 each = £2100. (6000 because not all sell, so have fees but no carriage charge) less listing refunds on say 1000 @ £0.07 = £70.00. £2030.

That leaves -£1222.00 and with paypal on say... conservatively 80% of my payments.. well, my paypal fees are usually around £100 (just guessing here) so -£1200. That leaves me £2422 out of pocket on P&P (if I actually add the ebay & paypal fees into my P&P costs, which I actually don't).

So, without factoring in listing, etc, I look like I gain £808 on P&P. Could I claim that as my labour cost?

Geez, I started doing this as a joke, but now I'm depressed. Okay, okay, I AM joking.

But it get you thinking, doesn't it?

    Baff :-)
