Wireless and LAN connection problems with PC

Hi all.

I've taken my old PC to my parents house for them to use, but I can't seem to get it working properly on their internet. I reinstalled Windows XP on it a couple of weeks ago and have had it working at my house on the wireless with no problems.

First problem is that whenever that PC goes onto the wireless, it causes the wireless to go down every couple of minutes. When the wireless is disabled on it, other things like my laptop and my iphone work fine over the wireless without disconnections. The pc is messing it up every time it goes online.

Secondly, we've tried to connect the PC via an ethernet cable, but it won't detect its LAN port. It definitely has one, I've checked that the motherboard has one and the light comes on at the back when we plug an ethernet cable in, but it just won't find it in device manager or anything.

Don't have a clue what to do. Have tried updating drivers for motherboard, wireless card, and router, haven't helped.

This pc has never been used via ethernet, it's always been wireless since my ex partner built it for me a few years ago.

The parts are: Motherboard is an Abit KV7 (VIA KT600-8237), wireless card is an Edimax Wireless LAN pci card 7128g, router is a Netgear WGR614v9.

Please help, tearing my hair out here :( Thank you!

    Hi,

Do you know what security you are using ? Have you got windows updated for XP like Service pack 3? is the driver for the Lan installed ?

    Hi,

Do you mean what security the wireless is set to, or antivirus etc? The router uses WPA-PSK, and the PC has AVG and Zonealarm running, which are the same as on my laptop. Windows XP has all the latest updates.

When it comes to the LAN drivers, I have no idea. I've been on the Abit website and found the various drivers for my motherboard on here http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/download_driver_detail.php?pFILE_TYPE=Driver&pMAIN_TYPE=Motherboard&pTITLE_ON_SCREEN=KV7&pSOCKET_TYPE=Socket%20A and I downloaded the top one, the SATA driver, and I also downloaded the VIA Fast Ethernet LAN Drive one but this wouldn't install, it gives an error something like "Cannot find the NIC card". I also went on the VIA website and downloaded drivers from there and it wouldn't work still.

We managed to fix it now (the lan port part) turns out the integrated lan was disabled in the bios (possibly due to having a wireless network card in aswell)
If anyone knows how to fix the wireless it would be usefull for future but we have at least got an internet connection now.

  • I've had this a couple of times. Once the computer had a shedload of viruses and whenever it was connected to the internet they went mental and crashed everything trying to send their malicious little messages home. The other time, I unfortunately can't remember what I did to fix it, or possibly I did several things and don't know what worked. You could try logging into the wireless router's admin settings (usually there's an address on the bottom of the router in the format of 192.168.0.1 or something--you type that into a browser bar) and then finding a way to give the device a static IP address. I think that might have been what worked, though what was causing the issue, I don't know!

    Good luck!
