Car 2k - 4k Suggestions?

Im looking to buy a 2nd hand car im hoping someone can suggest the best manu/model to get.

Its just for 1 person I have no family and do very little miles each year (so economy isnt an issue) id prefer something not too big and speed would be nice but not really essential

Some form of diesel, high mpg, cheap tax.

Maybe a Renault Clio 1.5 dci, i believe its about £40 a year road tax, and clears over 65mpg for a diesel.

ive only had a licence for a couple of years even though im in my 30's. cares have been a 306 diesel, 09 plate scirocco gt both did there jobs fine.
