car insurance excess

Hi guys,
I've got a question about paying excess for your car insurance. In January I hit a car, it was all sorted out as being my fault and I was told in Febraury that I would have to pay the excess. Fair enough. But its now August and they haven't asked for any money. I've even cancelled my old policy and they still havent asked for the money. Is there a set amount of time that can go by where I can refuse to pay it? I dont want to be stung by a hefty bill when I least expect it.
Thanks,
Dannii:rotfl:
