If you said to the general public that the budget deficit (£165 billion) is equivalent to around £5,689 per taxpayer in this country. Maybe their reaction would be different.

As £5,689 is £474 per month, or £109 per week or £15.58p per day.
does it all have to paid back in 1 year?

Like a credit card. What's not paid this year needs to be paid at a later date plus interest.

My observation isn't so much about economics as sound financial management.

Something that's coming home to roost in the USA now.

naah, just roll each years awkward deficit into 1 easily manageable National Debt - then get the BoE to print some money to pay off the Debt ;)

Treating the public like mugs will backfire big time on Labour. As the dawn of realisation becomes fact.

A bit cloud cuckooish that, election tomorrow and it would be a Labour win, in 12 months it will be a Labour landslide, LibDems stripped down to one or two seats in Cornwall and the Scottish Isles (if they are lucky).

Labour did what Labour always do. Spend until the money has gone and then borrow it and borrow too much. You then need a Conservative Govt to sort out the mess. However, if the Conservatives stay in too long they will cut things too much and Labour will be voted back in to start spending again. And so the cycle begins again.

    Checks and balances, very healthy.

    Oh perlease Stevie,
the truth is Labour did some good for the country, but sadly this was out weighed by the problems they caused.

Labours problem was the cabinet and policy makers were all middle class, highly inteligent people who had no common sense and who believed they knew what was best for the country and the working class as a whole...They believed they could manipulate the masses by making them rely on benefits(tax credits etc) when in fact I know how to spend my money far better.

Rather than create employment through investing in industry, creating a skilled workforce to take the country on they just sat back and kept taking the golden eggs from the golden goose(Banking sector) which could never last and was doomed to fail..........

Their Shocking actions will have repercussions for decades to come...............I have lived under both Tory and Labour governments in the 70,s and 80,s and to be honest they were all sh1te so why single out the Tories now? Your obviously an educated guy so why act so naive?
