Plastic Greenhouses

I have some plants mainly pepper and chilli that I am hoping I can keep over the winter. We don't have room in the house as they are in quite large pots.

Will they survive the winter in one of those cheap plastic greenhouses??

Possibly. I have over wintered chillis before using a plastic greenhouse together with a fleece wrap, but I do have a south facing garden in southern England so it gets every last bit of sun and warmth. However last winter's cold snap killed them off so I've had to start again. If you do use a plastic greenhouse don't forget to water the plants (sorry if that sounds obvious but I've been caught out by forgetting that even if we've had days of rain it doesn't mean the covered plants get watered). :o

I would say no, not a chance.

I would have to say no too. The plastic doesn't last and tears easily, the one time it gets too cold or the winds get up a bit, or you split it when you go to feed them you'll have probs.

I'd definitely say bring them indoors if you have the space
You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt

  • Save your money and buy something robust. We've had two of these greenhouses and they blow over at the slightest opportunity.

Sorry not to be more positive.

I have no idea if it would work, but if it were me I would try taking them out of the pots, pruning the roots and plants right back, then repotting in the size pots you can fit in your house.

It may work, it may not work, but you haven't got anything to lose.

I've had chillis out in relatively cold weather, but once it gets below freezing and stays below it, they don't last long.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but as it is semi relevant thought I'd post here.

Would it be safe to transfer seedlings into a plastic greenhouse around about late March? In S.East. And when you keep plants in these how do you let air in during the day, do you just leave the flap at the front lifted up (concerned about wind) and is it just on hot days you have to let in some air?

Also are those paraffin heaters safe in one of these?
